Videos more videos Biography Natalie Portman is an American actress who is known for her role as Alice in Closer. This role won her a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar nomination in the same category. Natalie was born as Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem, Israel on June 9, 1981. Her father is an infertility specialist and her mother an artist. Her family shifted to America when she was 3. Natalie showed a keen interest in acting as a young child and developed her passion for acting by attending theater camps in school holidays. A Revlon agent discovered her at the age of 11 in a pizza parlor in New York and offered her modeling assignments. She was more interested in acting and was soon introduced to acting talent scouts. After working in the Broadway musical Ruthless (1993), Natalie made her film debut with Luc Besson's Leon (aka The Professional) (1994) when she was 12. She was originally turned down for the role. She eventually won the role and got positive reviews. She played the lead role in the film as a girl who gets training from a hit man to be an assassin to avenge her brother's death and eventually falls in love with him. In 1994, she also worked in a short film Developing. This was followed by a small role in the action film Heat (1995) starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. In 1996, she worked in Woody Allen's musical film Everyone Says I Love You. However, Natalie got her big break with the role of the flirtatious, young neighbor in Beautiful Girls (1996). Critics were impressed with her performance and she started getting roles worthy of her talent. That year, she was signed for the trilogy of Star Wars when she was just 14. She played the role of Queen Padme Amidala in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). The film was a box office superhit and took her stardom to new heights. She went on to do the sequels, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005). For her role in Anywhere But Here (1999), Natalie was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Natalie kept a balance between her acting career and her personal life. She completed her high school and received her graduation degree in Psychology from Harvard in 2003. Her Harvard degree proved lucky for her and in 2005, she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Role and a Golden Globe for her role in Closer (2004). In 2005, Natalie finished working for the Star Wars trilogy and had a makeover. She was seen without her hair in V for Vendetta (2005), a film based on Allan Moore's comic book series.
