Biography
Gisele Bündchen is a Brazilian supermodel. In 2006, Forbes declared her the highest paid model in the world for the fifth consecutive year. She reportedly earned $30 million between June 2005 and June 2006 and her personal wealth estimated at $150 million has earned her the Guinness Book world records as the world's richest supermodel.
Gisele Caroline Nonnenmacher Bündchen was born on July 20, 1980 in the southern Brazilian town of Horizontina. The daughter of German-Brazilian parents, Gisele has five sisters-Raquel, Graziela, Gabriela, Rafaela, and Patrícia. Patricia is her fraternal twin sister born just five minutes after Gisele.
When young, Gisele was often taunted by her school friends because of her extraordinary height. By the time she was 13, she had already reached 170 cm. Her school friends even nicknamed her "Olívia Palito" (Portuguese for Olive Oyl) after the cartoon character Popeye's skinny girlfriend.
Due to her height, and the popularity of volleyball in Brazil, Gisele originally wanted to be a professional volleyball player with an aim of becoming a member of the Brazilian team, Sogipa. However, fate had other things in store for her. She got her first break in 1994 when at the age of 14. She was spotted by a modeling agent while eating a Big Mac when on a trip to São Paulo. She was in São Paulo with Dilson Stien, a model instructor. In 1993, at their mother's insistence, Gisele and her sisters Patrícia and Gabriela had taken a model course instructed by Dilson Stein, to correct their posture.
In Sao Palo, Gisele was selected by the Brazilian Elite agents for a national contest. She came second in the contest and went ahead to Ibiza, Spain, for the world contest where she came in fourth.
Gisele's real journey in the fashion world began in 1996 when she moved to New York City. She made her debut at the Fashion Week.
In the next three years, she featured in numerous ramp shows and advertising campaigns. In 1999, she won the VH1/Vogue Model of the Year award. In 2000, she hosted the ceremony along with actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. The same year she also became only the fourth model to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine where she was named "the most beautiful girl in the world".
In 2000, Gisele signed a multiyear deal with Victoria's Secret. Often touted as the highest paid contract in the fashion industry, her association with Victoria's Secret generates $5 million a year excluding a percentage of the sales from the products that she represents.
Till date, Gisele has appeared on the cover of numerous fashion magazines including Vogue’s various international editions, ELLE, Allure, The Face, Arena (magazine), Flare, Time, Vanity Fair, Forbes, Esquire, Veja, Caras, GQ, and Marie Claire. She has also featured in a variety of advertising campaigns including several seasons for Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Versace, Givenchy, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Earl Jean, Zara, Chloé, Michael Kors, and Louis Vuitton. Gisele also represents several Brazilian brands such as Vivo, Multiplan, Colcci and Credicard and also models for the German brand C&A.
Over the years, Gisele has been linked with numerous men; model Scott Barnhill, hotel tycoon Vikram Chatwal, Josh Hartnett, Brazilian billionaire João Paulo Diniz, and surfer Kelly Slater to name a few.
However, her most popular romance has been her on/off relationship with Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio.
Though in august 2006, Gisele indicated that she might be retiring from modeling, it'll be some time before another supermodel matches her international appeal.
