Biography
Mary-Kate Olsen is an American actress. She and her twin sister, Ashley Olsen, are better known as the Olsen twins and are famous for their role as Michelle Tanner on the hit sitcom, Full House (From 1987).
Mary-Kate Olsen was born on June 13, 1986 in Sherman Oaks, California just two minutes after her twin sister, Ashley. She got her big break when she was just a few months old. Her mother, Jarnette took both the twins to an audition for Full House. The twins were hired after the twins didn't cry when producers held them. Mary-Kate shared the role with her sister, Ashley. Along with the success of the sitcom, Mary-Kate became an instant baby celebrity along with her twin.
The sitcom Full House ran for eight seasons and watching the twins grow with each episode endeared them to millions of fans, especially young girls. Soon Full House merchandise such as books and dolls based on Mary-Kate and Ashley was selling like hotcakes. Riding on this popularity wave, a company called Dualstar Entertainment was formed to tap the twins' potential.
In 1992, Mary-Kate made her film debut as Sarah Thompson in To Grandmother's House We Go. Ashley also starred in this movie as her twin sister, Julie. The average success of this film led to their starring in many made-for-television and straight-to-video movies including Double, Double, Toil and Trouble, How the West Was Fun, and It Takes Two.
In 1995, Mary-Kate along with her sister Ashley starred as daring detectives in the video mystery action series The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley. The tagline of the series was "Will solve any crime by dinner time".
In 1998, Mary-Kate and Ashley starred in the ABC series Two of a Kind.
In 2001, Mary-Kate and her twin sister starred in the series So Little Time. This sitcom was not as popular as their other appearances mainly due to its poor plot rather than their performances.
In 2004, after graduating from high school, Mary-Kate and Ashley attended college at New York University. In June 2004, Mary-Kate joined a rehab program for Anorexia.
The twins have worked in a staggering 40 video titles with sales of 30 million copies, and six music albums with sales of 1.5 million copies. Their books have sold 29 million copies. Dualstar Entertainment earned $500 million in 2001 and around $1 billion in 2002. When the twins turned 18, they became millionaires with the presidentship of the company.
Even after becoming adults, Mary-Kate and Ashley are still popular among young audiences. They are seen at presentation ceremonies of various shows, including the MTV Video Music Awards.
On April 29, 2004, at the age of 17, Mary-Kate and Ashley received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the youngest celebrities to receive this honor.
In 2006, Mary-Kate worked alone without Ashley for the first time in Factory Girl (2006).
