Videos more videos Biography Amy Lee is an American singer, pianist, and songwriter. She is best known as the lead singer of the rock band Evanescence that has won two Grammy Awards. Amy Lynn Lee was born on December 13, 1981 in California to her parents, John Lee and Sarah Cargill. Her father, John Lee is a disc jockey and TV personality. She has three siblings, a brother, Robby, and two sisters, Carrie and Lori. She also had another sister who had died at the age of three in 1987 from an unidentified illness. She has written many songs dedicated to her memory. As a child, Amy loved music and learnt piano for nine years. Her family shifted house many times and finally settled down in Little Rock, Arkansas. In junior high school, Amy joined the choir and took part in all-state competitions. She became the president of her choir council in high school. In 1995, in a youth camp Amy met Ben Moody, the guitarist of the band Evanescence. Ben heard her playing I Would Do Anything For Love by Meatloaf on a piano. He was very impressed and together, they composed many songs while in high school. They formed Evanescence and played together in local bookstores and cafes. In 1998, they recorded their first EP, Evanescence and in 1999, recorded another EP Sound Asleep. In 2000, Amy and Moody recorded another EP Origin. It included the song Understanding (Wash It All Away) that became a local hit. It was with Origin that Amy and her band got their first break. Producer Pete Mathews overheard the band and referred them to Wind-up Records. Amy and Moody soon landed a contract with the label. In 2003, Evanescence released their first album Fallen. The band now also included guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray. The album included the songs Whisper, Imaginary, and My Immortal, which were also on their EP Origin. It also included the song Hello written in memory of her sister. The hit single Bring Me To Life was also featured on the album as well as the soundtrack of the action film Daredevil (2003). This song brought mainstream success to the band and the album Fallen went quintuple platinum and was a constant feature on the Billboard Top 10. In October 2003, Ben Moody left the band when they were on their first worldwide tour. However, Amy did not give up. She hired Cold's Terry Balsamo as his replacement. That year, Evanescence was nominated for five Grammy Awards and won two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance (for the song Bring Me To Life). In 2004, Amy performed Broken with Seether's lead singer and her boyfriend, Shaun Morgan for Seether's album Disclaimer II. The song was to be a part of the soundtrack for the film The Punisher (2004). In 2006, Amy and her band Evanescence released their second album The Open Door.
